We have always taken the time to get to know our clients so that we deliver on their expectations and results consistently.

This has been brought into sharp focus in recent months when we have been engaged to realise a new venture in motorsport called the VIP Paddock Club.

This project is the brainchild of racing car driver and Managing Director of Pinnacle Telecom, Alan Bonner. Alan has been in motorsport for many years, but always felt that it could be promoted to a wider audience. He had the idea that if people could get up close to the drivers and cars, the experience would be infectious!

He decided to set up the enterprise to do just that. It provides corporate hospitality products suitable for both major companies and SMEs. This mix of motorsport, hospitality and advertising is exciting for all ages and it is cost-effective too.

FMS joined forces with Alan in December 2004 to help him realise his dream and build a project that would take the idea off the drawing board and into reality.

It is still early days, but FMS has applied good project management practice to an evolving project, essentially asking the key questions of who, what, when, where, why and how and building them into the project documentation.

This has provided the foundation for the project and we are now in a position to bolt on the project modules. The project is structured so that we can learn quickly from the initial pilot event and translate the lessons learned into the rollout stages.

This project implementation is of a different nature to the familiar ground of IT services and BPO. However, it is clear that the project module disciplines are transferable and are essential to take ideas into action!

FMS WAS delighted to take part in the CFO Summit at the London Heathrow Marriott Hotel on 13 and 14 September 2004. The event was organised by the World Trade Group, and a number of key themes for discussion and presentation — all linked to the concerns of CFOs — were explored.

FMS had the opportunity to exhibit a multimedia message on the subject of project risk. The issue of risk was of interest to a number of the delegates, many of them having made varying degrees of progress in implementing formal controls, both financially and at enterprise level.

FMS highlighted the need for having a project risk process which ensured that the risks were then managed and reviewed to increase the probability of project success. We also reinforced the need to have this approach to feed directly into an Enterprise-Wide Risk Management (ERM) process.

There was a further set of themes in the FMS presentation asking questions about a company's attitude to risk and their maturity in taking control.

There was also time for informal discussion over business briefings at lunch, allowing the delegates and service providers to share views and ideas.

The Chairperson was Donald McCormack, past presenter of Newsnight. His preparation ensured the presentations, ranging from Sarbanes-Oxley to the impact of the EU expansion, were searching and on time!

FMS realises that companies need to have clear goals and determination to move forward in the 21st century. This event was invaluable in understanding current key business issues and matching them to market solutions and services.

THE ISO 9001:2000 standard is what businesses must achieve in order to show their commitment to quality. The ISO 9000:1994 standard will lapse at the end of this year therefore organisations have been working to transition to the new standard.

ISO 9001:2000 differs significantly from the 1994 standard in that quality must be demonstrably led by management, it should be process-based, and continuous improvement must be an integral part of the quality approach.

FMS is pleased to announce that in recent months they have been successful in supporting two businesses that were working to achieve certification and in one instance, FMS was responsible for the project management and in the other for the internal auditing and quality consultancy.

The key services of FMS are process management, project management and risk management. The capabilities and experience, which FMS has built up in these areas in recent years, proved invaluable to the success of these quality certification projects. FMS has developed an approach towards managing the planning and delivery of processes, procedures, documentation and, vitally, education necessary to achieve certification.

Ian French of FMS is not at all surprised by these findings. "You can blame everything and anything under the sun but the fact remains that doing good business is getting harder, we are under more pressure and have less time to react than ever before."
